Dmytro Atamanetz

Dmytro Atamanetz [Дмитро Атаманець], (b. 1882 in Nyzhchi Lubyanka, Ternopil, Ukraine; d. 1976 in Wayne, MI). Singer, choir director, Ukrainian School teacher, and church figure in Michigan and Illinois. He received training in church music for three years at a school for cantors in Stanislaviv (now Ivano-Frankivsk). Upon his arrival in America in 1913, he settled in Detroit, where from 1913 to 1916 he directed the choir at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, and afterwards at Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hamtramck, MI. Then in 1921, he moved to Chicago to become the director at St. Nicholas and spent the next 25 years conducting the cathedral choir and teaching at the Ukrainian School. Around 1945, he returned to his former position in Hamtramck as choir director of Immaculate Conception. Professor Atamanetz retired in 1952 and passed away in 1976 in the Detroit suburb of Wayne, MI.
