Dmytro Atamanetz

Dmytro Atamanetz [Дмитро Атаманець], (b. 1882 in Nyzhchi Lubyanka, Ternopil, Ukraine; d. 1976 in Wayne, MI). Singer, choir director, Ukrainian School teacher, and church figure in Michigan and Illinois. He received three years of training in church music at a school for cantors in Stanislaviv (now Ivano-Frankivsk). Upon his arrival in America in 1913, he settled in Detroit, where he directed the choir at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church (1913-1916), and afterwards at Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hamtramck, MI. He moved to Chicago in 1921 to become the choirmaster at St. Nicholas. There he spent the next 25 years conducting the cathedral choir and teaching classes at the Ukrainian School. Around 1945, he returned to his former position in Hamtramck as choir director of Immaculate Conception. Professor Atamanetz retired in 1952 and passed away in 1976 in the Detroit suburb of Wayne, MI.
