Eugene Hornyak

Eugene Hornyak (later Bishop Augustine, OSBM) [Євген Горняк], (b. October  7,1919, in Kucura, Voivodina, in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia; d. November 16, 2003, in London, UK). The first Apostolic Exarch of the Apostolic Exarchate for Ukrainians in Great Britain, and one of the few Ukrainian bishops to attend the Second Vatican Council. Eugene Hornyak was born to Ukrainian parents living in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (now Serbia). Answering the call to become a priest, he entered the seminary at the Pontifical Ruthenian College of St. Josaphat’s in Rome in 1940. He became a priest in 1945. Being an accomplished musician with a melodious tenor voice, he was motivated to learn the art of choral conducting. Amidst the turmoil of WWII, he came to the U.S. and found a home in Pittsburgh, PA, where he served the Ruthenian Eparchy as priest, choir master, and professor of Canon Law and Sacred Theology. Later, in 1956, he went to Canada to join the Order of St. Basil the Great (OSBM). From there, he went to Stamford, CT, and taught at the Catholic seminary. He was elevated to bishop in 1961 at the Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral in Philadelphia, PA, and took on the name Augustine. He died in 2003 at the age of 84.
