Theodot Khoroshy

Theodot Khoroshy (later Metropolitan Michael of Toronto) [Теодот Хороший], (b. July 10, 1885, in Fedorovka, Ukraine; d. May 5, 1977, in Toronto, Ontario). A bishop, poet, writer, and composer of liturgical music. Theodot Khoroshy entered the pedagogical seminary in the town of Shamovka in the Kherson region of Ukraine, and later studied at the Theological Seminary and the Faculty of History-Philology of St. Vladimir’s Seminary in Kyiv. He was ordained a deacon in 1912, and later a priest in 1920. During the Nazi German occupation of Ukraine in 1941, he organized a Higher Church Government. In 1942, he was tonsured a monk (named after Archangel Michael), and was consecrated bishop at St. Andrew’s Cathedral in Kiev. He was elevated to archbishop later that year. Archbishop Michael came to Canada in 1951 at the invitation of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada and was appointed “Archbishop of Toronto and the Eastern Diocese”. He was elevated to Metropolitan in 1973. He died on May 5, 1977, and is buried in Prospect Cemetery in Toronto.
