Rev. Eugene Korolyshyn

Rev. Eugene Korolyshyn [Євген Королишин], (b. 1892 in Hrabovets, Ternopil, Ukraine; d. March 18, 1970, in Johnstown, PA). The Korolyshyn family arrived in America around the turn of the century and settled in Detroit, MI. Eugene was one of seven children, all of whom were fine musicians. The Korolyshyns were a very musical family. His father Wasyl and his uncle Gregory were the first choir directors at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic in Detroit, MI. Eugene succeeded them in 1910 at the young age of 18. He was ordained an Orthodox priest in Chicago in 1929. One of his first parishes was in Scranton, PA (St. Michael), during which time his talented son Julius served as choir director. Later pastoral assignments included Ambridge, PA (St. Vladimir: 1938-1940), Pittsburgh (St. Vladimir: 1941-1949), and Boston (Holy Trinity: 1949-1952). While in Boston, Fr. Korolyshyn staged the opera “Zaporozhetz za Dunayem.” He spent the rest of his life in Johnstown, PA, as the pastor of SS. Peter and Paul. He died on March 18, 1970, and is buried at St. Andrew’s Cemetery in South Bound Brook, NJ.
