Ipolit Omelsky

Ipolit Omelsky [Іполіт Омельський], (b. November 18, 1873, in Mytkiv, Chernihiv oblast, Ukraine; d. September 13, 1949, in Bad-Oeynhausen, Germany). Ukrainian teacher, conductor, composer, poet, and folklorist. Omelsky was born in 1873 in the village of Mytkiv. During his time as a student at the State Teachers’ Seminary in Chernivtsi, he studied music with Czech composer Antin Kuzhel. He also served for a time in the Austro-Hungarian army. He was a schoolteacher by profession and taught in local communities. Omelsky’s choral works often appeared in the magazines of the day and were popular with choirs in Halychyna and Bukovyna. Omelsky retired in the 1930s and lived in Chernivtsi. He and his family then moved in 1940 to Germany, where he died on September 13, 1949, in the town of Bad-Oeynhausen.
