Rev. Damascene Popowich

Rev. Damascene Popowich [о. Дaмaскин Попович, ЧСВВ], (b. December 28, 1889, in Zbarazh, Ternopil oblast; d. January 12, 1969, in Mundare, Alberta). Born Danylo Popovych in 1889. He entered the priesthood in 1919 and was invited to come to Canada in 1923 by  Bishop Nykyta Budka. He served various parishes and mission stations in Manitoba and Saskatchewan before entering the Basilian Order at Mundare in 1929. Upon professing his final vows, he took on the monastic name “Damascene.” He was stationed in Edmonton (1933) and later in Mundare (1934), where he became the first director of the “Basilian Press.”
