Denys Sichynsky

Denys Sichynsky [Денис Січинський], (b. October 2, 1865, in the village of Kliuvyntsi, Ternopil region, Ukraine; d. May 26, 1909, in Stanislaviv, Ivano-Frankivsk region, Ukraine). Music teacher, copyist, composer, arranger, conductor, performer, organizer, and critic. Sichynsky received his first musical training in Ternopil and later at the Lviv Conservatory (1888–1891). He organized “Boyan” Singing Societies in Lviv, Kolomyia, Stanyslaviv, and Peremyshl. In addition to his compositions for the church, he wrote symphonic works, instrumental pieces for the piano, art songs, and many folk song arrangements. Having spent his entire life working as a music teacher, copyist, arranger, conductor, performer, organizer, critic, and composer, he is recognized by many historians as being the first professionally trained musician in Haylchyna. He died in 1909 in Stanislaviv (now Ivano-Frankivsk).
