Leon Sorochynsky

Leon Sorochynsky [Леон Сорочинськиӣ], (b. 1895 in Haisyn, Vinnytsia, Ukraine; d. January 31, 1963, in Scranton, PA). Colleague of the legendary director Oleksandr Koshetz. During the first half of the 20th century, the name Sorochynsky was well known in the world of Ukrainian choirs. Born in Halychyna, Sorochynsky came to America around 1903 and settled in Olyphant, PA. He studied with the famous composer and conductor Alexander Koshetz and sang with Koshetz’s Ukrainian National Chorus during their legendary tour of Europe, and North and South America. From the 1920s onward, he organized choral groups in Rochester, Buffalo, Chicago, Detroit, and Cleveland. From 1936-1947, he had great success with the choir of SS. Cyril and Methodius Greek Catholic Church in Olyphant, PA. From there he relocated to St. Michael Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Scranton, PA where he continued to work until his death in 1963.
