Rev. Volodymyr Stech [Володимир Стех], (b. July 12, 1863, in Verbytsia, Lviv, Ukraine; d. July 16, 1945, in Passaic, NJ). Priest and composer of more than eighty songs for the church. His songs are melodious and uncomplicated, making them ideal for congregational singing. He was called to America in 1907 by Bishop Soter Ortynsky and charged with organizing new churches. He founded parishes in Buffalo (1907), Minneapolis (1908), and North Dakota (1909). In 1913, he served at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Elmira Heights, NY; in 1917 at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church (now Orthodox) in Troy, NY; and in 1928 at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Whippany, NJ. His final assignment was in Passaic, NJ, where he died on July 16, 1945.
