Ivan Truchly [Іван Трухлий], (b. 1884 in Poltava, Ukraine; d. May 21, 1975 in NY). Conductor and composer. Ivan Truchly was born in 1884 in a village near Poltava. He studied music at the Kyiv Conservatory and earned his degree in 1910. Within his circle of friends and colleagues were luminaries such as Koshetz, Stetsenko, Leontovych, and Yatsenevych. He became known for his excellent work with choirs in Ukraine, Slovakia, and Germany. Professor Truchly came to New York City in 1950 and settled in the Bronx. He conducted at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral. Afterwards, in 1962, he was invited to Chicago to become the choir director of St. Vladimir Cathedral, the “Boyan” Choral Society, and the legendary “Surma” Chorus. The Maestro passed away in 1975 at the age of 91 and is buried at St. Andrew’s Cemetery in South Bound Brook, New Jersey. Engraved on his tombstone is the opening phrase of “Коли Звізда Ясна,” a carol from Zakarpattia that he transcribed and arranged.
