Osyp Holowackyj

Osyp Holowackyj [Осип Головацький], (b. March 19, 1919, in Ukraine; d. March 18, 2005, in Fort Lauderdale, FL). In the 1940s, he was choir director at Archangel Michael Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Baltimore, MD. He moved to McKees Rocks, PA, where he served as director at St. Mary Ukrainian Orthodox Church from 1950 to 1964. At that time, he was also in charge of the Ukrainian Orthodox League Choir of Western Pennsylvania – a group of singers from the neighboring communities of the Pittsburgh area, including McKees Rocks, Arnold, Monessen, Ambridge, Aliquippa, Butler, and Carnegie. In 1965, he relocated to Clifton, NJ, where he directed the Lysenko Choir of the Holy Ascension parish until 1984. He retired and moved to Florida, but remained active throughout the 1990s as director of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Cooper City. Prof. Holowackyj died on March 18, 2005, at the age of 85. He is buried at Saint Andrew Cemetery in South Bound Brook, NJ.
