Borys Kudryk

Borys Kudryk [Борис Кудрик], (b. 1897 in Rohatyn, Ivano-Frankivsk oblast, Ukraine; d. 1952 in Potma, Dubravlag Penal Colony, Mordovia, Russian Federation). Composer, educator, and pioneer researcher in the field of Ukrainian church music. The son of a priest, Kudryk developed a deep love for sacred music. His interest led him to study composition at the Vienna Academy of Music (1915-1918). In the field of musicology, he is best known for his influential 1937 monograph entitled “A Survey of Ukrainian Church Music.” As a teacher, he attracted many students, including Andrij Hnatyshyn. In 1945, while still in Vienna, he was arrested by the Communist authorities and sentenced to ten years in a Russian gulag in Siberia, where he died on March 28, 1952.
