Dr. Pavlo Macenko [Павло Масенко], (b. 1897 in Kyrykivka, Ukraine; d. 1991 in Winnipeg, Manitoba). Teacher, musicologist, conductor, composer. Macenko was born not far from Kharkiv in the town of Kyrykivka. He studied at the Ukrainian Higher Pedagogical Institute (1926-1928) and then earned his doctorate in musical pedagogy in 1932 at the Prague Conservatory of Music. In 1936, he immigrated to Canada and settled in Winnipeg. In 1956, he began teaching at St. Andrew’s College, and two years later he moved to Edmonton to serve as rector of St. John’s Institute until 1961. He returned to Manitoba in 1963 and lectured at St. Vladimir’s College in Roblin, a post that he held until 1972. In the field of musicology, Dr. Macenko wrote more than five hundred studies, reviews, and articles on the history of Ukrainian church music. He died in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the age of 94.
