Volodymyr Shostachko

Volodymyr Shostachko [Володимир Шостaчко], (b: October 10, 1896, in Voroblyk Korolivs’kyi, Korosno county–a Lemko enclave in southern Poland; d: ca. 1960s), church choir director who later became an Orthodox priest. He came to America in 1913, just before the outbreak of World War I, and settled in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania. He studied music from 1918 to 1924 at a school in nearby Kittanning, PA. Eventually, he became the choir director at three different parishes: St. Mary’s in McKees Rocks (1920s); SS. Peter and Paul in Cleveland, Ohio (1930s); and St. Demetrius in Carteret, New Jersey (1940s). He became a deacon in 1944 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1957, after which he was assigned to St. Mary’s in Jones City, Oklahoma (1958-1962).
