Joseph Zayatz

Joseph Zayatz [Йосип Заєць], (b. Apr 14, 1893, in Austria; d. 1971 in Syracuse, NY). Long-time cantor and choir director at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Syracuse, NY. Joseph Zayatz, a native of Western Ukraine, studied church history, liturgy, and music in Lviv. After completing his final exams in the presence of Metropolitan Archbishop Andrij Sheptytsky, Prof. Zayatz came to America in 1920 and settled in Cleveland, OH. Following several temporary assignments in Akron (Holy Ghost) and Wilkes-Barre (SS. Peter and Paul), he was transferred in 1933 to Syracuse, NY. Also, around that time, Zayatz became president of an organization called the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Teachers’ Association. He worked together with Theodore Kaskiw, another well-known choir director of that era.
