Ivan Chomyn [Іван Хомин], (b. August 8, 1916, in Lviv, Ukraine; d. May 25, 1989, in New York, NY). Ivan Chomyn trained at the Lviv Conservatory of Music, and went on to become a soloist with the Trembita Chorus. During the war, he was forced to leave his homeland and seek refuge in the DP camp in Aschaffenburg, Germany, where he organized the “Suma” Male Chorus. He came to America in 1948 and took on the duties of cantor and choir director at Transfiguration of Our Lord Catholic Church in Shamokin, PA, where he remained for fourteen years. In 1962, he relocated to New York City to become the cantor and choir director at St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church. On May 28, 1988, Professor Chomyn conducted the combined choirs of New York City, Yonkers, and Perth Amboy at a Pontifical Divine Liturgy at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in commemoration of the Millennium of Christianity in Ukraine. After forty-one years as a choir director, Professor Chomyn passed away on May 25, 1989, and is interred at Transfiguration Cemetery in Shamokin, PA.
