Konstantin Orlyk [Константін Орлик], (b. 1897 in Merefa, Ukraine; d. 1966 in Detroit, MI). Konstantin Orlyk was born in 1897 in the town of Merefa, Ukraine, which is not far from Kharkiv. His real name at birth was Konstantin Shchyt, but for reasons unknown he changed his last name to Orlyk. At the age of 16 he entered the Kyiv Conservatory, and there he met Oleksandr Koshetz, who later invited him to join the Ukrainian National Chorus. From 1921 to 1926 Orlyk, a tenor, took part in the choir’s legendary tour of Europe and the Americas. After the tour, Orlyk was involved with a number of choruses in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan. In 1932, while he was living in Pittsburgh, he organized the Ukrainian National Choir of Pennsylvania. In 1934, he directed the Boyan Choir at St. John’s Ukrainian Catholic Church on Clippert Avenue in Detroit, MI. A 1946 newspaper clipping mentions Orlyk as directing the Boyan Choir at SS. Cyril and Methodius Greek Catholic Church in Auburn, NY. He died in Detroit in 1966.
