Ivan Nedilsky [Івaн Недільський], (b. 1895 in the village of Zolotyi Potik, Ternopil oblast, Ukraine; d. June 25, 1970, in New York, NY). Composer, cellist, and teacher. Worked at the Ukrainian gymnasium in Pidhaitsi, and at the same time directed the Boyan men’s choir. Beginning in 1928, he became a director and teacher at the Stanislaviv branch of the Mykola Lysenko Higher Music Institute, as well as the conductor of the Ivan Franko Music and Drama Theater. In the spring of 1944, he entered the Bayreuth Ukrainian camp for displaced persons in Germany where he organized a choir. He came to the United States in 1948 and was instrumental in the founding of the Ukrainian Music Institute. He is buried in St. Andrew’s Cemetery in South Bound Brook, NJ. Engraved on his tombstone is the opening phrase of “Зaсяялo сонце золоте,” his most famous song.
